Alex Hanimann

2015/16

Alex Hanimann is an artist based in St. Gallen and Zürich, whose practice spans drawing, text, installation, sculpture, video and painting. Alex studied at the Rorschach teaching seminar and Zurich School of Design in Switzerland before co-founding the Kunsthalle St Gallen and acting as a member of the Federal Art Commission from 1997 to 2004. Since 2008, Alex has been a member of the Cultural Commission of the city of St. Gallen and is currently a professor at the Zurich University of the Arts. 

Alex Hanimann has exhibited extensively in Switzerland, Germany, France and Mexico and has worked on various public projects. His work has been presented at Aargauer Kunsthaus (2009), MAMCO, Geneva (2012 ), Museum im Bellpark, Kriens (2016), Kunsthalle Darmstadt (2018). His exhibition Same But Different has been programmed to tour at Kunstmuseum St.Gallen, Villa Merkel Esslingen, Frac Grand Large – Hauts-de-France Dunkerque.

Landis & Gyr Stiftung, Switzerland

The Landis & Gyr foundation awards studio scholarships to Swiss artists and cultural professionals in London, Budapest, Sofia and Zug. Its London-based residency partnership with Acme was established in 1987, and provides six month long work/live opportunities for ten Swiss artists per year. Artists are selected for the programme directly by Landis & Gyr Stiftung and must demonstrate a track record of achievement in their field. Over two hundred visual artists, curators, writers, musicians and composers have benefitted from the programme. Residencies are based in Stepney, E1 and are available to Swiss residents only
