Philipp Engelmann studied drama at the Conservatory for Music in Bern and at the Ecole supérieure d'art dramatique du Conservatoire de Genève. After working as a actor and in the ensemble of various theatres in Bern and Zurich, in 1982/3 he was engaged as an assistant director to the Comédie de Genève, Geneva.
Philipp made his debut as a playwright in 1986 with Die Hochzeitfahrt, a multi-layered family and social panorama set on the eve of the First World War. The play emerged from a theatre competition organized by the magazine Musik & Theater and was premiered at the Schauspielhaus Zurich, on October 9, 1986. In 1989 he wrote No place for heroes for the Theater am Neumarkt. In 1989/90 Philipp was resident author at the Theater Basel. The world premieres of Oktoberföhn (1991) and Nightlife (1993) followed at the State Theater Württemberg-Hohenzollern in Tübingen. Further works for the stage include: Tödlichliebbt (world premiere in 1997), Puss in Boots (based on Charles Perrault, world premiere 1998), and A Fallen Angel in the Hotel Switzerland about the writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1998).
Landis & Gyr Stiftung, Switzerland
The Landis & Gyr foundation awards studio scholarships to Swiss artists and cultural professionals in London, Budapest, Sofia and Zug. Its London-based residency partnership with Acme was established in 1987, and provides six month long work/live opportunities for ten Swiss artists per year. Artists are selected for the programme directly by Landis & Gyr Stiftung and must demonstrate a track record of achievement in their field. Over two hundred visual artists, curators, writers, musicians and composers have benefitted from the programme. Residencies are based in Stepney, E1 and are available to Swiss residents only
