Harriet Foyster

Chelsea BA Studio Award
2015/16

Harriet Foyster’s practice is strongly rooted in research revolving around ways that material circumstance and ideology converge to construct, reinforce and perpetuate behavioural patterns that strengthen the neoliberal agenda, and how the logics of private property are central to contemporary subjectivity production.

At the core of her practice is an examination of the notion of labour, and how it is understood, measured and rewarded in the context of late capitalist economics, which pervade our everyday lives. In her work for PEER, Harriet adopted the language of self-improvement and life-coaching to playfully propose that success is a 'private religion'.

After completing her award in September 2016, Rutie presented Wherewithal at PEER alongside fellow early career programme artists Alison Ballance, Hugo Brazão, and Rutie Borthwick.

Chelsea BA Studio Award

The Chelsea BA Award was a partnership between Acme and Chelsea College (University of the Arts, London), funded by Chelsea Arts Club Trust and Acme, between 2009-17. Aiming to provide a bridge between art school and professional practice, the award included a bursary, rent-free studio space and mentoring programme. Recipients of Acme’s Early Career Awards Programme work from shared studios in order to encourage an environment of peer support and critical dialogue.
