Zulkifli Lee

Khazanah Nasional Associate Artist Residency Programme
2019

Zulkifli Lee is a versatile multi-disciplinary artist based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, who works in the mediums of painting, sculpture, print and installation.

Lee's practice explores the dynamic between personalised and impersonalised forms, using the language of materials. His works are often made from natural, organic mediums such as soil, sand, corrosion patina, wood, natural latex, as well as man-made materials such as steel, plastic etc., and juxtapose the beauty of the relationship and paradox between humans and nature.

Bridging Islamic aesthetic philosophies with contemporary principles and execution, Lee references traditional Islamic and Malay folk art to create minimal yet intricate compositions. His motifs usually involve systematic and rhythmic geometric patterns, but rather than striving for total control, Lee embraces the element of chance and plays into the phenomenological aspect of the materials' naturally occurring properties.

Khazanah Nasional, Malaysia

Khazanah Nasional, in collaboration with Acme, developed the Khazanah Nasional Associate Artist Residency Programme (KAAR), a 12-week residency programme catered for emerging Malaysian artists based at Acme studios. An initiative under the Khazanah Residency Programme, the KAAR is an annual programme designed to develop and prepare young artists for the next growth phase in their professional careers. Typically, artists for the KAAR are nominated by galleries and residencies in Malaysia and subsequently selected by Khazanah Nasional and Acme.
