Lara Smithson

Lara Smithson holds a BA in Fine Art from The Slade School of Art. She has a multi-disciplinary practice that examines historical and current contradictions between health, ritual, religion, guilt, divine and political forces and the impact of these discrepancies on the human condition. The affinity and discordance of mind and body is often emphasised, and works have dealt with this in relation to treatments of medical conditions such as PTSD and Aphasia. Smithson’s work isn’t linear but rather cyclical, her drawings, texts and costumes reappearing in films and installations.

Selected exhibitions and residencies include: Unnamed Saints’, Coleman Projects, London (Solo 2023) Artist in Residence at St John’s College Oxford (2023), Bridget Riley Fellowship at The British School at Rome (2021/22) Brewers Towner International, The Towner, Eastbourne UK (Group 2022/23) Unnamed Saint, Una Vetrina, Rome, Italy (Solo 2022), She Spoke Rain The Why Not Gallery, Tbilisi, Georgia (Solo 2018).
