Stefan Cantante

Hessische Kulturstiftung Residency

Stefan Cantante’s artistic practice derives from research on subcultural phenomenas within the history of gender and fashion studies. Affection, love and longing, complicated but also kitsch are embedded within the words and feelings of his raw performative works. Stefan chooses to practice as an outsider, reflected in the connotations of different mediums subverted in his work: high low, hard soft, in out. In a performative gesture resembling costuming, he straddles the spheres of theatre, art and fashion, playfully endowing and eschewing high art delineations through use and disuse of (the) canvas.

Stefan has exhibited in solo and group shows at Kunstverein Tiergarten, Berlin (2019); fffriedrich, Frankfurt/M (2019); Café Strange, Antwerp (2019); Städel Museum, Frankfurt/M (2018); after the butcher, Berlin (2016); Kunstverein Frankfurt (2016); wellwellwell, Vienna (2015); Portikus, Frankfurt/M (2015) and Bundeskunsthalle Bonn (2015).
