Rain Howard

Goldsmiths MFA Award
2018/19

Rain Howard's experimental sculptural practice investigates notions of gender and sexuality, playfully challenging and undermining prevailing sculptural traditions. Undermining the proposed virility of masculine modernist sculpture, Rain’s work actively challenges expectations of art and the gaze between viewer and art object.

Rain was selected for the 2018/19 Goldsmiths MFA Award by Natasha Hoare (Curator, Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art), artist David Batchelor and Charlie Coffey (Residencies & Awards Programme Manager, Acme) from a shortlist of six MFA graduate artists from Goldsmiths, University of London.

After completing her award in September 2019, Rain presented Out of Shape at PEER alongside fellow early career programme artists Greta Davies and Marylyn Molisso, whose practices also centre on large-scale installation and sculpture.

Goldsmiths MFA Award

The Goldsmiths MFA Award is a partnership between Acme, Goldsmiths, University of London and Jane Hamlyn. Aiming to provide a bridge between art school and professional practice, the award includes a generous bursary, rent-free studio space and a mentoring programme. Recipients of Acme’s Early Career Awards Programme work from shared studios in order to encourage an environment of peer support and critical dialogue.
