Luke Parker

Australia Council for the Arts Residency
2003

Luke Parker is an Australian artist working with lens-based media. He sees his practice as an attempt to create markers of time and space that examine the human experience in relation to universal phenomena and deep time. Luke uses experimental and historic forms of photography to trace passages of light and time in the form of photograms, as well as time-lapse and multiple-exposure images. Other works collage found images to navigate associative connections through the overwhelming proliferation of photographic imagery since the nineteenth century.

Luke’s work has been included in exhibitions at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Victoria, Geelong Gallery, Gertrude Contemporary, the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Monash Gallery of Art, Carriageworks, Artspace, the National Art School Gallery, Campbelltown Arts Centre, and Penrith Regional Gallery. He has made works for many artist-run galleries, including for 55 Sydenham Road Marrickville, a project space where he was also a member of the artist board from 2015–18.

His current research focuses on the history of photography, with an emphasis on the medium’s deployment in nineteenth century science. In early 2018, as part of a residency at the Cité internationale des arts, Luke had the opportunity to research historic photography archives and holdings at institutions in Paris, including the Observatoire de Paris.
