John Mateer

Associate Artist Residency
2012

John Mateer is a critic and curator. Since the 1990’s he has contributed to most Australian magazines as well as to the international publications Asian Art News and Frieze. Over the past two decades he has been a guest lecturer at many institutions, including at the Maumaus interdependent art school in Lisbon. Inspired by his research while the inaugural Australia Council art-writer in residence, he curated the first of two large-scale exhibitions intended to place Australian art in the larger context of the Indian Ocean region.

John is currently compiling an archive of his art criticism, writing essays and developing several exhibition projects and a program of feature-length films made by artists.

Associate Artist Residency

Acme's Associate Artist Residency allows artists to apply directly to Acme for shorter-term (up to three months) residency opportunities. These residencies are selected directly by Acme and tailored to suit the development and networking needs of international artists, allowing them to engage in research, develop relationships and focus on their work in a supported environment.
