Birgit Kempker

Landis & Gyr Stiftung Residency
2003

Birgit Kempker is a German writer based in Basel. Her practice is innovative and wide-ranging, and she has produced texts for exhibitions, theatre and radio performances, net-art projects, installations and videos, as well as publishing novels, poems and essays. Birgit works with all artistic means that language allows: investigating the connections between art and writing.

In 1985 Birgit received the Prize of the State of Carinthia at the Ingeborg Bachmann Competition in Klagenfurt, followed by a scholarship from the Literary Colloquium Berlin in 1986 and a scholarship from the German Literature fund in 1987. Her radio plays have also been rewarded, with the 1996 Swiss Radio Play Foundation Prize, and ‘Das Goldene Hörnetz' in 2000. Birgit has worked as a lecturer in poetic processes at the Institut Kunst Fhnw, Basel, the Swiss Literature Institute, Biel, and the F + F School for Art and Design.

Landis & Gyr Stiftung, Switzerland

The Landis & Gyr foundation awards studio scholarships to Swiss artists and cultural professionals in London, Budapest, Sofia and Zug. Its London-based residency partnership with Acme was established in 1987, and provides six month long work/live opportunities for ten Swiss artists per year. Artists are selected for the programme directly by Landis & Gyr Stiftung and must demonstrate a track record of achievement in their field. Over two hundred visual artists, curators, writers, musicians and composers have benefitted from the programme. Residencies are based in Stepney, E1 and are available to Swiss residents only
