Jane Burton

Australia Council for the Arts Residency
2006

Jane Burton is an Australian photographer based in Melbourne. Jane’s work explores landscape, architecture and portraits in loosely associated photographic series; her work has been described as an investigation into the feminine. Jane’s photography conjures mystery, nostalgia, film noir, potential threat, spirituality, sexuality and melancholy. In 2011 she produced a photobook, Other Stories, whose images are reminiscent of old photographic processes and hand-colouring techniques, evoking a feeling rather than describing a narrative.

Recent exhibitions include: Trace Elements: spirit and memory in Japanese and Australian photomedia, Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, Japan (2008); motherland, Johnston Gallery, Perth and Bett Gallery, Sydney (2008); Jane Burton, Heiser Gallery, Brisbane and The Art Vault, Mildura (2009); The Lake, Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney (2009); Imitation of Life, Screen Space, Melbourne and India Art Fair, New Dehli (2011); Other Stories, Bett Gallery, Hobart (2012); Fantastic Dreamland – Contemporary Australian Photography, Shanghai Urban Planning Centre, Shanghai (2012). Her work resides in prominent collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.
