Laura Padgett

Hessische Kulturstiftung Residency
2001/2

Laura J. Padgett is an American artist, photographer and filmmaker. Her work explores unoccupied spaces, both real and imaginary, to reveal truths that are often overlooked. Like her subject, her work itself inhabits the spaces between photographic storytelling and installation, between language and image, between history and current affairs. While she uses photographic media, the results are always more than photographic objects.

Since the nineties Laura has produced a wide-ranging body of work, adopting various genres such as architectural photography, still life and urban street photography while exploring our ideas of communal and cultural identity. Her work is often displayed in public spaces and plays with scale, material and the way we interpret images and their relation to history. The breadth of her work demonstrates an ability to move fluidly between genres, based on her background in painting, art history and architecture.

Recent solo exhibitions include: Open Equations, Galerie-Peter-Sillem, Frankfurt am Main (2019); somehow real, Museum Giersch der Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main (2017); Confined Space, Galerie Rautenstrauch, zu Gast im Onomato Künstlerverein, Düsseldorf (2016); Many Told Tales, Galerie Straihammer & Seidenschwann, Vienna (2016); Confined Space, Heussenstammstiftung, Frankfurt am Main (2015). Laura’s film Fragment (1986-88) was also recently presented at CROSSROADS 2020 San Francisco Cinematheque, curated by Steve Polta.

Hessische Kulturstiftung, Germany
Acme has managed a residency programme on behalf of Hessische Kulturstiftung since 1995, located on Lyal Road, Bow, E3. Residencies are awarded to artists for a period of 12 months, and the size of the accommodation enables the artist to bring their family or dependents for the length of residency. Based in a residential area populated by many artists, the house is well situated for access to other arts spaces and central London. Residencies are open to all artists from Germany. Applications and selection are dealt with directly by Hessische Kulturstiftung.
