Deborah Duffin worked for Acme between 1982 and 1986. During this time, part of her role was managing bookings for the Showroom Gallery on Bonner Road (later the Acme Project Space, and now home to Auto Italia), which Acme rented out to artists to organise their own exhibitions. She realised that, as fine art courses did not teach the practicalities of professional practice, many artists who booked the Showroom were struggling with the process of putting on an exhibition.

Deborah proposed a pamphlet to Jonathan Harvey to support artists with the practical aspects of putting on an exhibition. Jonathan liked the idea and offered to edit it, and also contributed his own extensive knowledge gained through the years of running the Acme Gallery. This pamphlet turned into a book Organising Your Own Exhibition, A Guide for Artists, which received an Arts Council grant. The publication, promotion and distribution of the book to an international audience was managed by Deborah through the Acme office.
