Mathew Jones
Australia Council for the Arts Residency
2001
Mathew Jones is an Australian-born artist, living and working in London. Mathew’s paintings, photographs and installations confront the division between private and public life, often addressing sexuality and desire, but also fate and the passage of time. With subtlety and humour, his work examines the way in which individuals create a place in the world – drawing on such varied sources as horoscopes and telephone numbers, historical events and personal advertisements.
Selected solo and two-person exhibitions include: A Place I’ve Never Seen Before, Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney (1993); POOF!, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (1993); Mathew Jones & Simon Starling, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney (2002).
