The viola player Mariana Doughty was born in Cornwall and educated at Chetham's School in Manchester and Jesus College Cambridge. She then moved to Switzerland, where she formed chamber music ensembles and plays as solo viola in the Basel Chamber Orchestra.
Mariana will spend her residency researching the English musician Lawrance Collingwood, who lived in the first half of the twentieth century in Britain before travelling to St Petersburg to study music. His first opera was half-finished when he left the city between the revolutions of 1917 with his Russian wife and two children. A year later he was sent back as an interpreter for the allies of the White (anti-Bolshevik) Army. Back in England in 1919, he became musical director at Sadler`s Wells, and introduced Russian opera to the English public. He then worked with EMI and produced many historical landmark recordings: Wagner Operas with Furtwängler, Elgar orchestral works with the composer's cooperation; the famed Russian Bass, Shaliapin, and the young Yehudi Menuhin.
Mariana draws parallels between her own musical path which has also involved an emigration, a second language, a hectic concert activity and a series of recordings.
Landis & Gyr Stiftung, Switzerland
The Landis & Gyr foundation awards studio scholarships to Swiss artists and cultural professionals in London, Budapest, Sofia and Zug. Its London-based residency partnership with Acme was established in 1987, and provides six month long work/live opportunities for ten Swiss artists per year. Artists are selected for the programme directly by Landis & Gyr Stiftung and must demonstrate a track record of achievement in their field. Over two hundred visual artists, curators, writers, musicians and composers have benefitted from the programme. Residencies are based in Stepney, E1 and are available to Swiss residents only
