Francisca Sosa López's practice is based on the complicated relationship she has with her country of origin, Venezuela. Reflecting on issues concerning the region, Francisca produces work based on personal feelings, reactions, disappointments, and affections to the country. Francisca considers a memory or play, a certain song that gives way to a particular feeling that she tries to catch through gestures and colour. She uses mark making to portray instincts, while writing letters gives her space to organize her thoughts and share specific ideas. Moreover, the use of various surfaces allow materiality to be used as another form of expression.
"I shift from paper, to fabrics from home, to more recently, creating surfaces from discarded material as an attempt to have a more sustainable practice whilst exploring the idea of reconstruction. The concept of making something beautiful from accumulated trash is a repeated action that I use as practice for when we can pick up the debris, and re-build Venezuela."
Francisca was selected for the 2020/21 Adrian Carruthers Award by Amal Khalaf the Director of Programmes at Cubitt, Kieren Reed (Director, Slade School of Fine Art), and Paul Bayley (Head of Residencies & Awards, Acme) from a shortlist of six MFA graduate artists from The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL.
Adrian Carruthers Award
The Adrian Carruthers Award is a partnership between Acme and the Slade School of Fine Art, funded by Acme and the Adrian Carruthers Memorial Fund. Aiming to provide a bridge between art school and professional practice, the award includes a generous bursary, rent-free studio space and a mentoring programme. Recipients of Acme’s Early Career Awards Programme work from shared studios in order to encourage an environment of peer support and critical dialogue.
