Christian Quesnel

Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) Residency
2009

Christian Quesnel is a comic book artist and illustrator of children’s stories and books. He was the first cartoonist to receive the artistic creation award from Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) for his overall achievement.

Christian's first comic book, Le Crépuscule des Bois-Brûlés, a historical story about the Métis revolt, appeared in 1995. He continued with further historical comics, like La Quête des Oubliés (1998) and Le Grand Feu (1999). In 2001, he began publishing his comic 666.5 in the cultural review Liaison. In addition, he made illustrations for the publishing houses L'Interligne and Vents d'Ouest, and cooperated with Yves and Félix Saint-Denis on a book about the history of Ontario.

Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ)

In 2008-2009, in partnership with Québec's Ministry of Culture and Communications and the Ministry of International Relations and the Francophonie, and on the recommendation of Arts Council England, Conseil des arts et des lettres (CALQ) approached Acme to establish the Québec Studio in London, thereby expanding the network of residencies offered abroad to Québec artists and writers. The residency provides two six month long residencies per year in Bow, E3 for artists who have at least 10 years' experience of professional practice. Applications and selection are undertaken directly by CALQ.
