Beate Rothmaier

Beate Rothmaier is a writer who was born in Ellwangen, Germany, and now lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland. After studying and taking a Master’s degree in German and French Literature at the Universities of Munich and Tubingen, she worked for publishing houses, theatres and as a copywriter at an advertising agency.
Her critically acclaimed debut novel Caspar (2005) was awarded the Friedrich-Holderlin-Förderpreis. In 2010 she published her second novel, Fischvogel (The Fishbird), for which she was awarded a year’s grant from the Arts Council of Zurich, and in 2013 Atmen, bis die Flut kommt (Breathing Till The Tide Comes In), the moving story of a father who finds his way to love his child with special needs. In 2015 she was a scholarship holder of the Landis & Gyr cultural foundation in London and in 2016 as Writer-in-Residence at the Deutsches Haus in New York. She won the 2019 Lilly Ronchetti Prize from the Swiss Writers' Association.
Landis & Gyr Stiftung, Switzerland
The Landis & Gyr foundation awards studio scholarships to Swiss artists and cultural professionals in London, Budapest, Sofia and Zug. Its London-based residency partnership with Acme was established in 1987, and provides six month long work/live opportunities for ten Swiss artists per year. Artists are selected for the programme directly by Landis & Gyr Stiftung and must demonstrate a track record of achievement in their field. Over two hundred visual artists, curators, writers, musicians and composers have benefitted from the programme. Residencies are based in Stepney, E1 and are available to Swiss residents only
