Anne Ferran
Australia Council for the Arts Residency
2005
Anne Ferran is an Australian artist and photographer living and working in Sydney. Since 1995 she has used contemporary photomedia as a means to recall a vanished past, working with the often meagre residues of Australian colonial history. Her work reflects the ongoing difficulty of grasping and making sense of a ruined and fragmented past. Her 2005 residency in London was the start of an enduring attachment to the waterways of East London that has so far given rise to an artist’s book, a photographic series, Backwater (2005), and two video works, CANAL (2009) and Body of Water (2011).
Recent solo exhibitions include: White Against Red, Sutton Gallery, Melbourne (2018); Flying Colour, Sutton Gallery, Melbourne (2016); Intimate Journals, Upstairs Gallert, Bundanon Homestead (2016); Shadow Land, touring survey exhibition (2013-16); Body of Water, Sutton Gallery, Melbourne (2013); Songbirds are Everywhere, Stills Gallery, Sydney; and CANAL, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2009).
Anne has been the recipient of numerous grants and prizes, including eight Arts Council Grants (1985 – 2008); a Canada Council Foreign Visiting Artist Grant (1990); the New South Wales Ministry for the Arts Women and Arts Fellowship (1999); Gold COast Ulrick Schubert Photographic Award (2004); and the Higashikawa International Photographer Award, Japan (2009).
