Vela Arbutina is an interdisciplinary artist and designer, through her practice she observes societies by looking at structures, hierarchies, classes, rules, norms, standards, restrictions, problems, infrastructures, methods of communication, methods of production and technology.
Vela was born in Switzerland, and studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. She has been collaborating with/showing work at BKVB Netherlands, BAK Bundesamt für Kultur Schweiz, Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Cabaret Voltaire Zurich, De Appel Amsterdam, Kraupa Tuscany Berlin, Ludlow 38, Kunsthall Oslo, Kunsthaus Baselland, Marciano Art Foundation, NGBK Berlin, PICA Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, Program Berlin, Societe Berlin, Silberkuppe Berlin, Swiss Institute amongst others. She has redesigned Girls Like Us
Magazine, collaborated with Alex Martinis Roe, Adam Szymczyk, Anna Uddenberg, Lisette Smiths and was awarded with 'The Most Beautiful Swiss Books Award'.
Aargauer Kuratorium, Switzerland
Aargauer Kuratorium has worked in partnership with Acme to develop and provide a London-based artists' residency since 1999. Based in Bow, E3, the residency enables a wide spectrum of practitioners connected with the Canton of Aargau, Switzerland, to undertake two six month long work/live residencies per year. Artist application and selection are conducted directly by Aargauer Kuratorium.
