#26 Adrian Carruthers Award 2023/24 announcement

We are very pleased to announce Sam Meredith as the recipient of the Adrian Carruthers Award 2023/24!

Sam was selected from a shortlist of artists by a panel including Pauline de Souza, the founder and director of Diversity Art Forum.

Sam primarily uses industrial materials, such as wood or metal. His sculptures are amorphic forms contained in pieces of architecture, negotiating completion, and expanding from the middle out. A playful and visceral approach to materials is also embodied in Sam's writing, which combines poetry, anecdotes, musings and memories that are sometimes spoken or performed.

As part of the Acme Early Career Programme, the Adrian Carruthers Award is a partnership between Acme and the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, supported by the family of Adrian Carruthers.

Now in its twenty-first year, this significant award for an early career artist was established in memory of the artist and Slade graduate, Adrian Carruthers, who worked from an Acme studio at Childers Street, Deptford.

The award was instigated by Adrian Carruthers’ family with the goal of providing a bridge between college and professional practice for MFA graduates from Slade School of Fine Art. It includes a bursary, rent-free studio space and mentoring programme tailored specifically to the graduate’s practice. ⠀

The current award holder is Hannah Morgan (2022/23), and previous recipients include Holly Buckle (2021/22), Francisca Sosa López (2020/21), Amy Steel (2019/20), Greta Davies (2018/19), Dominic Dispirito (2017/18), Josh Berry (2016/17), Rutie Borthwick (2015/16), Milou van der Maaden (2014/15) and Marianna Simnett (2013/14).
