Mathieu Beauséjour
Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) Residency
2014
Mathieu Beauséjour’s multidisciplinary practice evolves from a stand of resistance, opposition, détournement and “semiotic terrorism”. The artist is meticulously and consistently reflecting on the place of marginality in a normative world. He is preoccupied by the interpretative scope of the symbols of power – such as money, the monarchy and the sun, and the construction of history, through revolts and utopias. Mathieu is interested in the materialization of ideas as objects of art, as well as in the memory of constructed spaces.
Mathieu lives and works in Montreal. His work has been presented in numerous exhibitions in Canada and Europe, sat Montreal Fine Arts Museum (2016), Musée régional de Rimouski (2015), The Québec Triennial (2011), Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and at the Manif d’art 7 de Québec (2014). His works are held in numerous collections, including the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec as well as corporate and private collections.
Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ)
In 2008-2009, in partnership with Québec's Ministry of Culture and Communications and the Ministry of International Relations and the Francophonie, and on the recommendation of Arts Council England, Conseil des arts et des lettres (CALQ) approached Acme to establish the Québec Studio in London, thereby expanding the network of residencies offered abroad to Québec artists and writers. The residency provides two six month long residencies per year in Bow, E3 for artists who have at least 10 years' experience of professional practice. Applications and selection are undertaken directly by CALQ.
