Kate McMillan’s works incorporates film, sound, photography, sculpture, textiles and performance, to examine the persistence of difficult and forgotten histories in the present. Both her art practice and academic research engages with the residue of the past, with a specific focus on the colonial histories of Australia. She has written on the methodologies of creative resistance in the global south, and in feminist practices. Kate also works as an advocate, advisor and writer alongside her practice.

Kate’s work has been exhibited in and collected by major museums, biennales, festivals and institutions around the world, including The Civic Room, Glasgow and Arusha Gallery for the Edinburgh Arts Festival (2019); Moore Contemporary, Australia (2018), Castor Projects, London (2018); Kunstquartier Bethanian, Berlin (2017), Acme Project Space, London (2014); Performance Space Sydney (2014); Moana Project Space, Australia (2014).

Since 1992, the Australia Council for the Arts has partnered with Acme to provide London work/live residency opportunities for Australian visual artists. These residencies are located at Acme's Fire Station in Poplar, E14. Application and selection is undertaken directly by the Australia Council for the Arts.
