Miriam Cahn
Landis & Gyr Stiftung Residency
1996
Swiss artist Miriam Cahn's practice includes painting, drawing, performance, text, and film. She has worked since the 1970's immersing herself in political and social realities, and reacting to current events. The end of the 1970s and the 1980s brought more visibility to the feminist, peace, and ecological movements; it is then that the artist defined her work as a site of individual resistance. In the 1990s she closely observed the war in the Persian Gulf, the Balkan Wars and their media coverage. More recently, her work is an anxious reaction to the refugee crisis and the #Me Too movement.
Miriam represented Switzerland at the 41st Venice Biennale in 1984, two years after she withdrew her work from documenta 7 as an act of protest. She went on to show at documenta 14 in 2017: a show which brought her international fame. Selected solo exhibitions include: Miriam Cahn: ME AS HAPPENING, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (2020-21) and Sifang Art Museum, Nanjing (2019); MIRIAM CAHN: I AS HUMAN, Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, and Haus der Kunst, Munich (2019); everything is equally important, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (2019); DAS GENAUE HINSCHAUEN, Kunsthaus Bregenz (2019); ICH ALS MENSCH, Kunstmuseum Bern (2019); Verwandschaften, Cornerhouse, Manchester and touring (1990); Strategische Orte, Kunsthalle Baden-Baden and Kunstmuseum, Bonn (1985-6); Das Klassische Lieben, curated by Jean-Christophe Ammann, Kunsthalle Basel and touring (1983).
