David Keeling
Australia Council for the Arts Residency
1995
David Keeling is an Australian artist, he works mainly in landscape painting, with work informed by the tradition of the genre tailored to his native surroundings. His work has always been concerned with place, and land’s connection to human occupancy, focusing on topics such as Australia’s history of invasion and ecological destruction. For decades he has engaged with the nature–culture debate, giving form to the political–environmental realities of the day. His latest work has combined his long-standing explorations in landscape with modernist architecture, describing his concern with the way we perceive nature, and how we picture a nature that is so closely observed, measured, mapped, plotted, photographed and commodified.
David has exhibited at a number of regional galleries throughout Australia as well as in corporate and private collections in Australia and overseas. Selected exhibitions include: Gertrude Street Gallery, Melbourne; Ivan Dougherty Gallery, Sydney; Bett Gallery, Hobart (2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012); Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart (2003, 2005, 2010); National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2007); Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, Victoria (2004); Deakin University Gallery, Melbourne (2010); and the Embassy of Australia, Washington DC, USA (2012).
