Joanna Woodward

Fire Station Residency
1997-2001

Joanna Woodward (also known as JoWonder) is a multi-disciplinary artist, working with performance, painting, writing and animation. Her films, which use collage, textured painting, and text, provide counterpoint between the metaphysical and the playful. Lilliputian characters are often introduced to an apocalyptic realm ruled by giants.

Joanna's recent exhibitions include: Dear Christine (a tribute to Christine Keeler), Arthouse 1, London and Elysium Gallery, Swansea (2020); Limelight Club, London (2011); no:id gallery, London (2009-10), AQFFin gallery, London (2008). In 2008, Joanna set up the online archive British Women Artists (BWA). In 2019 BWA became an archive for women artists any nationality working in the UK; forming an alternative grassroots record of UK artistic practice establishing the group within reach of history.

Fire Station Residency 1997-2001

Acme's residency at the Fire Station is one of the most directly supportive schemes for artists in the United Kingdom, providing combined studio and living space at low rents, as well as a half rent residency for a deaf or disabled artist. This fixed-term residency scheme is intended to allow artists more time to concentrate on the development of their work and professional careers, and less time working to survive. 1997-2001 residents were selected by artists Tracy McKenna, Cornelia Parker, Adam Reynolds, and Acme co-founder Jonathan Harvey.
