Cynthia Cruz

Goldsmiths MFA Award
2014/15

Cynthia Cruz is a painter and sculptor from Miami, Florida. In her paintings hybrid forms, organic shapes, geometric designs and patterned planes are painted into fictitious scenes influenced by her interest in retro futurism, sci fi and folktales. Her sculptures are an extension of her paintings, created from found objects and various materials such as foam, tape, yarn and human hair.

Cynthia was selected by David Batchelor (artist), Jane Hamlyn (award donor), Adriana Paice (award donor, Artisa Foundation), and Julia Lancaster (Acme).

Upon completing her award in September 2015, Cynthia presented The Girl Who Ate All Her Hair at the Acme Project Space.

Goldsmiths MFA Award

The Goldsmiths MFA Award is a partnership between Acme and Goldsmiths, University of London, funded by Jane Hamlyn and Artisa Foundation in 2016/17. Aiming to provide a bridge between art school and professional practice, the award includes a generous bursary, rent-free studio space and a mentoring programme. Recipients of Acme’s Early Career Awards Programme work from shared studios in order to encourage an environment of peer support and critical dialogue.
